haikou meilan international airport is located 18 kilometers southeast of haikou city, hainan province, china. it is a class 4e civil transport airport. it is one of the most important trunk airports in china. haikou meilan international airport was officially opened on may 25, 1999; it became the first airport in china to have an off-island duty-free shop in december 2011; it completed the first phase of the terminal reconstruction and expansion project in january 2016; and started the second phase of the expansion project in november 2015.
haikou meilan international airport covers an area of 1140 hectares, with a runway of 3600 meters in length and 45 meters in width; parallel taxiway is 3600 meters in length and 23 meters in width; the total scale of the terminal is nearly 150,000 square meters, with a total area of 790,000 square meters apron and 78 aircraft parking seats. at present, the cumulative number of passengers transported is 22.6 million and the throughput of freight and post offices exceeded 300,000 tons.
